中国の政府関係者は政府が暴力的ゲームやポルノグラフィーから子供を護るためのキャンペーンと呼ぶキャンペーンの一環として、昨年の10月から12月の間に12575箇所のインターネットカフェを閉鎖したと月曜日に発表した。政府関係者は閉鎖されたインターネットカフェの大半が学校の近くにあった語った。
この弾圧は、中国文化部が昨年に学校の校舎から200メートル以内にある新規のインターネットカフェは一切許可しないように地方政府に命じた後に起きた。
アナリストは増加した一連の弾圧は共産党政府が有害であると考えている情報を入手することを人々から防ぐための決定を強化していることの現れであると語った。
Benjamin Edelman氏は米国のハーバード大学で中国の大規模なウェブサイトのフィルタリングシステムを調査している博士である。彼はアクセス制限はポルノサイトの他にも、台湾の独立を促すものや中国内で禁止されている法輪功集団に関連したサイトにも実施されていると語る。
「例えば、米国のマサセッチュー工科大学(MIT)は素晴らしい暗号化ソフトを提供しているが、もしあなたはこのソフトを使用すれば、あなたはデータを護ることができ、中国警察すらそれを解読することはできないだろう」Edelman氏はこのように言った。「だから、中国はしばしばMITのウェブサーバのほぼ全てにアクセス制限を掛けるのである。」
